This breakthrough technology for deep-seated tumor irradiation has become one of the leading forms of tumor and cancer treatment around the world. With proton therapy, tumor tissues are destroyed using protons.
This enables malignant tumors to be irradiated with extremely high precision, thereby preventing their growth while sparing healthy tissue surrounding the target. It is particularly important in the treatment of ocular melanomas, brain, skull-base or spinal cord tumors, or sarcomas. The widely-used spot-scanning technique for proton therapy was developed at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Switzerland.
