On April 21, 2021, the Swiss Federal Council approved the addition of the "Switzerland Innovation Park Ost" as the sixth site in the network of Switzerland Innovation. The goal of the new park is to promote innovation through the networking of science and industry. The thematic focus will be on the areas of health, digitization and the mechanical, electrical and metal industry.

The main location of the Switzerland Innovation Park Ost will be the Lerchenfeld campus close to the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology Empa (city of St. Gallen), with a secondary site in Buchs (Canton of St. Gallen). In addition to St. Gallen, the innovation park is being funded by the Cantons of Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Appenzell Innerrhoden and Thurgau, and the Principality of Liechtenstein.

The Switzerland Innovation Park Ost will offer a development, laboratory and work infrastructure for use by corporate research teams and scientific institutions in joint innovation projects. This ecosystem will help to boost their competitiveness and innovative performance.

The decision by the Federal Council marks the end of a year-long review and approval process involving an assessment of the project by an independent jury of experts. The Switzerland Innovation Park Ost will now become part of the Swiss network through its addition to the Switzerland Innovation foundation, which is the overall Swiss Innovation organization.
