The Electromobility Roadmap, originally launched in 2018, has achieved its goal ahead of schedule. The objective was to increase the share of plug-in electric vehicles among new passenger car registrations to 15 percent by the end of 2022. This target figure has actually been achieved every month since February 2021, with the strongest month being December 2021, in which the share of such vehicles reached 33%. At the suggestion of Federal Councilor Sommaruga, the industry and public sector collaborated to develop new goals for the second stage of the Roadmap, which will be in effect through 2025.
The venue chosen for the signing event was Switzerland Innovation Park Biel/Bienne, where research on efficient recycling processes and other technologies is being conducted at the Swiss Battery Technology Center. Head of Research Christian Ochsenbein expressed his hope that Switzerland will pioneer automated processes enabling industrial-scale dismantling of car batteries at the end of their service life so that the valuable raw materials they contain can be recovered.
