SDSC BOOSTS AI INNOVATION FROM NEW HQ AT BIOPÔLE
The Swiss Data Science Center opens its national headquarters at Biopôle Lausanne with CHF 7.5M in public funding to advance collaborative AI projects.

“Data science and AI are pivotal in the digital transformation of society, and our collaboration with the State of Vaud allows us to realize that vision through high-impact projects.”
Executive Director, SDSC
The Swiss Data Science Center (SDSC), a joint initiative by EPFL and ETH Zurich, has selected Biopôle Lausanne site of Switzerland Innovation Park West EPFL, as its national headquarters. Founded in 2017, the SDSC accelerates the application of data science and AI across academia, industry, and government. The new base strengthens its role as a hub for collaborative research and innovation in French-speaking Switzerland.
In support of this expansion, the canton of Vaud has committed CHF 7.5 million in funding through 2028. This financial backing will enable the SDSC to initiate cross-sector AI projects focused on life sciences, sustainability, and digital transformation. Key partners include the University of Lausanne (UNIL), HEIG-VD, and local SMEs, forming a robust innovation ecosystem around Biopôle.
To kick off this initiative, the SDSC launched ENERBAT, an 18-month pilot project using data science to enhance energy efficiency in buildings. By analyzing consumption data, the project aligns with Switzerland’s Energy Strategy 2050 and showcases the potential of AI for sustainable development.
Between 2025 and 2028, the SDSC will issue annual project calls, each offering CHF 250,000–300,000 in funding. These projects are expected to create up to 100 new jobs and significantly increase AI adoption in sectors such as healthcare and manufacturing. The SDSC’s presence at Biopôle reflects the region’s growing importance as a center for life science and digital innovation.
