ESA IN COLLABORATION WITH PSI OPENS DEEP-TECH INNOVATION HUB AT SWITZERLAND INNOVATION PARK INNOVAARE
ESA and PSI inaugurates ESDI at Switzerland Innovation Park Innovaare to drive quantum, materials and data in Europe.
“The inauguration of the European Space Deep-Tech Innovation Centre is a testimonial to ESA’s and Switzerland’s joint commitment to push innovation and drive economic growth. ESDI will contribute to strengthening the European deep tech ecosystem and promoting Swiss and European leadership in this domain.”
Director General, ESA
As part of its commitment to advancing Europe’s space innovation ecosystem, the European Space Agency (ESA) has launched the European Space Deep-Tech Innovation Centre (ESDI), created in close collaboration with the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI). Located at the Switzerland Innovation Park Innovaare in Villigen, ESDI constitutes ESA’s first permanent presence in Switzerland and reflects the increasing relevance of deep-tech capabilities for space.
Established as a centre of excellence under ESA leadership, ESDI is designed to accelerate the development and application of emerging technologies in quantum, data science, and materials. Its mission is to enable high-impact research and development by drawing on Switzerland’s leading research infrastructure and deep-tech ecosystem.
ESDI’s first operational platform, ESA Phi-Lab Switzerland, embedded within PSI, serves as a dedicated environment for use-inspired, interdisciplinary research. The platform bridges the gap between early-stage innovation and scalable solutions, focusing on quantum technologies, materials science, and data-driven technologies with the aim of delivering measurable benefits for both space and Earth-based applications.
