Landmines and unexploded ordnance continue to threaten communities and restrict the safe use of agricultural land, infrastructure, and residential areas. Conventional surveys can be time-consuming and may require specialists to enter potentially dangerous terrain. Founded in Calgary in 2023, SubSphere Corporation is developing a more data-driven approach to landmine and UXO detection.
Its flagship platform, Deminer®, combines drone-based data collection, multiple sensor technologies, geographic information, and AI-assisted analysis. The system is designed to support the detection and classification of potential landmines and UXO, including surface and semi surfaced UXOS, and present the results within a collaborative web environment. Rather than replacing trained demining professionals, the technology is intended to provide clearer information, reduce unnecessary exposure during initial surveys, and help focus specialist resources on areas requiring closer investigation.
SubSphere is expanding its international network at the intersection of advanced technology and humanitarian mine action. Headquartered in Alberta, Canada, with a representative presence in Zurich, the company collaborates with AvioTrax GmbH, a Zurich-based technology company, and works with partners in Canada, Switzerland, Cambodia, UK, and Ukraine.
Through its presence in Switzerland and its membership in the Swiss Drone Competence Centre at Park Ticino, SubSphere is connected to a broader ecosystem of expertise in drones, robotics, sensors, aviation, and applied research. This environment supports the company’s continued development of technology for landmine and UXO detection and aligns with key Swiss innovation priorities in robotics, mobility, aviation, and advanced manufacturing.
As part of the continued development and enhancement of its AI-enabled, drone-based detection system, SubSphere’s next step is to validate Deminer® across a wider range of soil types, terrain, vegetation, and operational conditions, said Shahab Moeini, Director and CSO of SubSphere.
At this stage, independently verified performance data on detection accuracy, survey efficiency, and large-scale field deployment remain limited. The extensive outdoor test area at Riviera Airport, within the Park Ticino ecosystem, provides an important environment for further testing, validation, and humanitarian demining training under representative field conditions.
“Future activities will focus on evaluating drone-assisted detection of buried landmines across different environments, including grassland, forested areas, and river-side terrain, while continuing to refine and improve the Deminer® AI detection capability,” Moeini said.
